Life happens. It happens every day. Going through life can be like trail riding a horse you just selected at random at a Dude Ranch. Maybe it's an older trail horse, a nag, who plods along, not keeping pace with the other horses on the trail, no matter how hard you drive it. You are left frustrated, impatient and fed up. Maybe it's like an unbroken stallion, running all over the place, bumping into things, going off the established trail and almost completely out of our control. On those days you are left feeling exhausted, frightened and doubtful. And then there are days when it's like your are riding a perfect Pinto Pony, who's like a trusted friend, and you two seem to work together effortlessly anticipating each other's next action. And on those days you are left energized, and wondering why there aren't more of THOSE days.
We often look at the stallion and the nag like something's wrong. If only the nag were faster, younger, more energetic. Or with the stallion, if only it were more attentive, more careful and didn't charge all over the place! And we hold out that SOMEDAY the stallion will be broken, SOMEDAY the nag will get more energy, and WHY can't all horses be like your Pinto Pony?
But life comes at us like it does. And what WE get to choose is how we want to frame or interpret the way it comes to us. What is the stallion teaching you: Trying something off-trail will reveal some unexpected goldmine? What is the nag teaching you: Steady consistent progress reveals a richness that was unavailable any other way?
We learn far more about life and ourselves on days that go "not as planned" (awful!) than we do by days that flow. And I invite you to re-shape the way you look at your days, both good and bad. What is it that your day is teaching you today? What insight are you grateful for seeing because it's gone this way?
Shifting your focus to "seeing the gold" in any given situation will not only shift your experience in the moment but lay the foundation for growth and appreciation for whatever life brings you!
