Which Seat is Yours?
Picture back to school as a child.
Early morning darkness. A bowl of cereal, or waffles from the toaster. Dressed and book bag packed. In 10 minutes you need to have your shoes on and be out the door to meet the school bus. Your mom or dad is blearily having coffee or cheerfully wishing you a "great day". Before you know it, it's time to leave. Sneakers on, backpack shouldered you trudge out in the early morning chill. Standing at the Bus Stop, you wait. It may be freezing cold, pouring rain, over cast or sunny.
Finally that so-familiar yellow bus lumbers up your street. Growling diesel engine, the lights flash as the air brakes squeak and the door accordions open. The driver nods as you board and scan the landscape of 40+ seats to choose from. Some occupied, others not. Much will go into the choice you make of where to sit, who to sit with or who to avoid. But we know one place you won't be sitting, that's in the driver's seat.
This is how life goes for kids. Working under someone else's direction and directive. Parents, the school, the coach, everywhere except with your friends. It's annoying, but keeps things moving along, and you show up and follow someone else's agenda. It's both easy and it's familiar.
It's different for adults. For us, there are only two seats to choose from on the school bus of life. The driver's seat and any other seat on the bus. Because every other seat isn't the driver's seat. And the driver's seat isn't any other seat.
We find ourselves working under someone else's agenda all the time. A boss, a spouse, a family member, our children, a friend, a car mechanic, a hair stylist. Endlessly modifying and changing our schedules meet the needs of others. To adjust to their wants and whims.
There are only two seats on the school bus of life. The driver's seat or any other seat. Which seat are you choosing?
